Summer Fitness (+Giveaway!)

July 03, 2015

Sunshine, Lollipops & Afros. Summer is finally here.

Summer and I have a love-hate relationship. Possibly because I spend the months prior hidden away in a corner somewhere eating potato chips, slowly forgetting what the inside of a gym looks like. Suddenly, June approaches and I realize I have a month to look right semi-naked, and then it's July and well.. you know how that goes. I usually go on my biggest "health-kicks" in the summer and engage in some intense gym-rat behaviour. Although, I try to stay fit all year around- I usually push for it a little harder in the summer. With all the festivals, mini road trips, outings and vacations- I find myself eating out... a lot. And while I try to keep it healthy, sometimes, you just want a big ass burger and a side of bottom-less fries (Red Robin, a personal favorite). So, here are my ways to try and keep myself motivated, and stay in shape during the summer.

By now, y'all know I love my clothes. So the first thing I do is buy myself hella gym attire. I don't know why, but new workout clothing makes me wanna work out like there's not tomorrow.

You don't even gotta be expensive about it, one or two outfits - and you're good to go. Both these outfits were under $45 each.

First outfit: LA EXPRESS (F21 / Sirens / Urban Behaviour)

Second outfit: Leggings: LA EXPRESS infinite leggings | Top: COSTCO champion sports bra | Sweater: WAL-MART

FABLETICS ALSO HAS AMAZING WORKOUT OUTFITS FOR $39.95!

It'd probably be a good idea to make a workout playlist. I like to make mine anywhere between 30 minutes and an hour. The length of my workout so I know when I'm done.

I separate them by workout type. Weights/Yoga/Running/Dance&Cardio.

Here is my Yoga/Stretching/Meditation Playlist:
Slow songs are best for Yoga/Stretching
Upbeat/Fastpaced songs are best for Running and Cardio (depending on the type of cardio you do - Jumprope and Zumba are my favorites)
Entertaining/Your Favorite songs are best for lifting weights since it can get boring.

Now as for the actual working out part (the part I tend to forget about..) The worst thing you can do to yourself is go from 0 to 100 (real quick).
Don't go from working out once in a blue moon to trying to work out every single day.. you'll burn out and you won't be consistent with it. (I've been guilty of this one too many times) Start small. 2-3 days a week, slowly increase to 4-5, and work your way up to 6-7 if you want, or stay wherever you're comfortable.

Having a set workout will make you more willing to actually work out. Figure out when it's arm/leg/core/cardio day, so you keep yourself even and on track.

CARDIO

A lot of people tell me they are not really sure what to do for cardio - Cardio is really important for fat loss/calorie burning; so here are so fast-paced, high energy, calorie burning workouts.

RUNNING: pretty simple, right? go for a run. 2-5K once or twice a week. (iPhone users: check out the Nike Training app for a virtual running coach, right at your finger tips)

Couch to 5K is a great way to get started with running, run 5k in 8 weeks. (Theres' an app! Or you could just use this table)

Not only do you burn a bunch of calories, build up your endurance and get a healthy heart; you also get sexy-lookin' legs you can add to that list.

Running not for you? ZUMBA/DANCE: My personal favorite, Zumba and dance. Make yourself a dance playlist and bust a move for an hour! Or find a ZUMBA class near you! I'm extremely picky about my Zumba, I like original - Latino Zumba with Latino music, however, some people start up Zumba classes and play some radio, dubstep mixes and I'm not the biggest fan of that; if that's your thing, go for it. Can't find a Zumba class near you? You could also buy a zumba fitness video or YouTube has TONS of Zumba fitness videos for free.

JUMP ROPE: Head over to Wal-Mart or Target and get yourself a skipping rope. Skip for an hour. Piece of cake. (Except not a piece of cake, we're trying to get healthy here. Piece of fruit.)

KICKBOXING: Hell yes, the baddest ass form of cardio. KICK. BOXING. Find yourself a kickboxing class and get to it. OR do the following videos on Youtube.
Jillian Michaels | Blogilates

WORKOUT VIDEOS: And of course, classic cardio workout videos will always be a good friend in your living room. (YouTube has many too! - Easy for Smart TVs!)
